Ah, well done. This image carries a lot of information and atmosphere. High marks.

King said 539 days ago:

See anything out of alignment, Jarrett?

Ana said 539 days ago:

would have worked for Phallic. :)_

George said 539 days ago:

@King
Do you see anything out of alignment? I hope not. I had Jarrett in mind as I worked this :-)

@Ana
I considered it for phallic but never got around to it :P

For those who may not know, this is a view through one of the very famous cable cars of San Francisco, looking up Powell Street from the Powell Street turnaround. You can see the two levers that the cable car operator use: one to actually engage the grip on the cable itself, and one to apply the brakes, which for a hill-studded city like San Francisco is especially important.

George said 539 days ago:

Come to think of it, while I'm sure that the lever in complete shadow is definitely one of the aforementioned levers, the other may not be. Hopefully someone who's a cable car aficionado can chime in here. Mark?

bioLarzen said 539 days ago:

Well, i guess it's Mark and his beloved Frisco streetcars again, right?

Him or not, it's a hugely enjoyable one. Would have also fitted in "Looking through", right?

25.

bioLarzen said 539 days ago:

Of course not him :)

Well, doesn't really matter, my opinion is still the same, so, congrats - George :)

George said 539 days ago:

bio, I blush that you mistook me for Mark.

I'm glad you like it, and thanks for your comment :-)

King said 539 days ago:

Oh, George, stop blushing. Mark already has a fat head.

Besides, put your work side by side with Mark's and you have apples and oranges, not apples and lesser apples.

pete said 538 days ago:

interesting idea.. i would be interested to see what the photo would look like with the focus being on what you can see through the window

George said 538 days ago:

King, stop it. I'm blushing again ;-)

George said 538 days ago:

Pete, do you mean you'd prefer that look? Fine by me; I'm just curious (George).

ImagoArticulus said 538 days ago:

Very interesting shot. A lot going on here, but it's all intriguing and, I think, works well.

George said 538 days ago:

@ImagoArticulus:
Thanks for the comment. I, too, feel it borders on cluttered, but I think it's just shy of that mainly because the eye is readily drawn to the view through the window, and all the stuff around simply serves to put the window in context.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it ;-)

Fuzzball said 538 days ago:

Absolutely fantastic -- it's like you're watching a movie through that window!

Blindfolded said 538 days ago:

I like how it makes me look through the door, it guides my eyes nicely.

18 comments and only 10 ratings for an image posted 18 hours ago? Could we get Brandon to hire homeless people to rate and comment on images after the first theme weekend?

Jem said 538 days ago:

I really like this shot - lots to look at, and yet not overcrowded. Your eye is drawn to the window and it has beautiful lines running down it. Great image!

pursang said 536 days ago:

George this shot is fantastic as I told you on your blog. The cable cars have three levers. The one in the foreground lit is the cable grip. The other is the brake and the one you cannot see is the 'oh crap' brake used when all else fails. It is a nasty looking thing, bright red and is basically a wedge that forces itself into the tracks of the cable car. It ruins the track, but saves those screaming down the hill.

Cable cars are designed to have a life span of 100 years. About 15 years ago, all cable car service was shut down in SF, the only place cable cars exist and are still in operation. There were no blue prints of the cars themselves, so the had to disassemble one and draw up plans on how to build new ones. Even the bell was cast from an original. All cable cars are made of wood, of which variety I'm not sure. I love everything about this great town and the cable cars are something that add so much character to this city.

Whew, I sure got wordy, didn't I?

George,
I was sure this was Feature-bound, but I could only vote once. Too bad it took so long.

Pursang,
Thanks for the very welcome lesson on cable cars.
