Instead of detracting, I think the flares add an element to this image.

Fredrik, you're totally right about making the eyes sharper. Right after I uploaded this I smacked myself because I forgot to use any sharpening at all. (A little aggravating to realize after the fact.) I have another version of this that's sharpened and I like it much better.

I used a little flashlight to do all the crazy flares and lights. Then I used a flash strobe on the face. This is actually a few different 8 second exposures put together. Other than combining the photos and doing some contrast there's no Photoshop filters or anything on this.

Not sure if it comes through, but I was trying to go for a 70s disco look. My wife says this looks like Luke Skywalker. :)
