Thanks all. A swallowtail caterpillar on some fennel in our yard. Because natural selection is so efficient on these critters, we "rescued" three of them and kept them in a butterfly incubator of sorts. Our children were able to watch them transform into swallowtail butterflys, and then release them back into our yard.

@ImagoArticulus - Every summer I find hundreds in my gardens, so I always make sure to have lots of carrot and dill planted for them to feast on. This is a lovely shot.
