It seems that the flash took away much of the moment drama of his playing and expression. Flat facial lighting.

I am not very comfortable with portraits, but I am trying.

I took this when I first got my camera, actually the first night I had it, and I relied on the in-camera flash, which is admittedly harsh. I also used the program mode for this since I'd only had the camera a few hours and having next to no experience with a digital camera, I had no idea how to use it yet. The SLR film camera I had was over 30 years old and I hadn't really picked it up in about 25 years so this is like starting from scratch for me. I have since purchased a new flash and have been using that with much better results.

What I see when I look at this one is the intensity in his eyes. Perhaps I should have selectively colored them to their electric blue/green color. I suppose because he is my son, I know the intensity that he has when it comes to playing the violin, and that's what I saw here, I thought others might pick up on that, I guess I was wrong. But I keep trying.

There's an intention in his face that is tangible. A bit overexposed for me, and the focus is more crisp on the instrument which draws the attention away.
