This will likely end up on the front page as it is a very well done photo. But I will have to say, that the dark bottom of this shot prevents me to see (what I believe) to be the relevance in this shot. I've turned my monitor every way I can think of to see it. It's beautiful, and I love the pose.

I'm going to guess this is a photo by Mark. The black space is exquisite...it really strengthens the composition and the sense of drama. This certainly fits the theme, but is so much more.

Thank you everyone. I really wrestled with the lower half of the lifter. I thought about reducing the exposure to create the sense that he was floating in air, but didn't like that. Then I kept the original exposure, but it detracted from the fulcrum point of his arm. So I ended up with the compromise that you see here, which I feel works the best. Personally I focus on the 'feel' of an image more than the technical aspects. An image certainly needs to have a certain level of quality, but the soul of the moment is always paramount in what I attempt to convey.

I also appreciate that some of you guessed that the image either belonged to me or King. It seems both of us have a few professional dance shots we've submitted here, so it's an easy guess.

eggplant, I really appreciate your comment about the negative space to the right. I too feel that the space and darkness adds much to the image. The native file is very close to what you see in terms of darkness as the single spotlight was the only illumination source on stage during this particular act of their performance. Actual performance shots like this one differ greatly from posed shots. The passion of the moment is conveyed in actual performance imagery.

Dancers are such athletes! No grunting, no obvious straining, they seem to move effortlessly on stage, smiling or expressions of great passion. But I can tell you first hand that standing just off stage as they complete their performances, I witness that they are dog tired! I truly admire such graceful discipline!
